How do you celebrate a 30th anniversary? A married couple might commemorate the occasion with traditional gifts of pearl jewelry. But if you’re the Ohio Lottery’s Cash Explosion television game show, you’d want something a little more festive.
The show started celebrating their anniversary back in November 2016 when they added merchandise prizes to the game board allowing players a chance to win prizes like TVs, laptops or gift cards. Then from June 3rd, to August 19th, the show aired its special-format, Cash Explosion XL, a 12-week series with three times the number of players per show. All this leading up to the finale; the 30th Anniversary Celebration where the show will be giving one lucky winner the single largest show payout in Cash Explosion history, $300,000.
Recording the much-anticipated special calls for an experience outside of the show’s regular Mills James Columbus studios. So, on Saturday, August 19th, Cash Explosion and almost 50 Mills James crew members are packing their bags and heading to the Stranahan Theater & Great Hall to record the 30th Anniversary Special.
The event begins with outdoor entertainment at 2:00 p.m. where fans can enjoy listening to live music while playing games and winning prizes. Cash Explosion has also partnered with The Toledo Northwestern Ohio Foodbank for a virtual food drive. The foodbank will be on hand during the outdoor entertainment to collect cash, checks, and virtual online donations. The first 1,000 people to donate to the foodbank at the show will receive a commemorative Cash Explosion 30th Anniversary merchandise item.
Doors open at 5:00 p.m. for viewing of the live show. Admission is free and open to the public, but seating is on a first-come first-served basis. The Stranahan Theater is a modern 2,424-seat concert hall featuring the largest proscenium stage in Northwest Ohio. The recorded episode will air the following Saturday, August 26th at 7:30 p.m. on stations throughout Ohio.
Cash Explosion has been produced at Mills James studios in Columbus since 2003 where they record shows every month in front of a live studio audience. This will be Cash Explosion’s first road show since October 2015 when Mills James telecast the show from Miami Valley Gaming in Lebanon, Ohio.
"Our challenge is transforming our given location — whatever type of facility it may be — into a high-definition television studio with a live audience ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands while delivering the familiar Cash Explosion TV game show experience Ohioans are used to watching every Saturday night," said Scott Lanum, Managing Partner and C.O.O. of Mills James. "Because of its magnitude, the show takes months of planning and a crew of 50, including sound and lighting technicians, video engineers, technical directors, videographers, stage managers and volunteers.”
