Scenic Project Lead

Mills James has an immediate opportunity for a creative scenic project lead to join the Mills James Experience Group. The scenic project lead is responsible for the successful coordination, planning, construction and installation of scenic and staging projects.  Some travel and the ability to multitask are required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervises and coordinates scenic crews, equipment, and technical needs on various projects

  • Assists in the coordination of shop build, packaging of scenic elements and its transport, installation, strike, and storage

  • Provides on-location project management to ensure accurate and timely execution, fabrication, and installation of scenery and scenic elements

  • Assumes a construction role in both shop and on-location projects

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the production budget and assists others in making strategic economic decisions

  • Serves as a role model for the rest of the scenic team, creating a professional atmosphere for clients and colleagues.

  • Contracts with outside vendors to provide additional services such as labor, equipment, and technology

  • Follows all safety procedures to ensure the safety of the crew, clients, and audiences.

  • Works closely with teams to provide guidance and cost estimates for scenic design

  • Works independently on construction projects that may include sets, remodeling of various Mills James facilities, building custom consoles and furniture, building custom road cases, and other building and maintenance projects as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or four years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 3-5 years of carpentry and construction planning and execution in a production environment including: managing construction labor, woodworking, metalworking, painting, and finish carpentry

  • Strong carpentry skills and knowledge of various construction means and methods

  • Hands-on approach related to carpentry, fabrication, paint, soft goods, print, and logistics

  • Ability to read construction drawings, layouts, and scenic documentation

  • A high degree of adaptability to a continually changing environment

  • Valid driver’s license required. Required to obtain US Passport and medical card if necessary. Must be available for 40% travel and work flexible hours.
